Research is the cornerstone of innovation and progress, involving the systematic investigation of questions, problems, or phenomena to uncover new knowledge or insights. It enables us to validate theories, develop solutions, and deepen our understanding of the world.
Epic Running was built on months of studying what truly keeps runners motivated — not just to start, but to stay consistent. We explored everything from gamified learning systems like Duolingo to ranked multiplayer environments like Call of Duty, applying behavioral psychology and competition-based mechanics to the world of fitness. The result is a system designed to reward effort, consistency, and progression — not just speed. This research-driven foundation ensures the app goes beyond tracking miles, helping runners feel real progress, purpose, and pride every time they lace up.
Epic Running was developed using modern mobile technologies built for speed, reliability, and scalability. We built the app natively for iOS using Swift and integrated Apple’s CoreLocation and HealthKit frameworks to enable accurate GPS run tracking and health data syncing. On the backend, we used a lightweight Node.js server with a scalable NoSQL database to handle user data, ranking logic, and XP progression. From the start, we focused on keeping the experience fast, responsive, and battery-efficient — because no runner wants to think about bugs mid-run.
The design of Epic Running was shaped around clarity, motivation, and identity. We took inspiration from the sleek aesthetics of gaming dashboards and combined them with the simplicity of health apps to create a clean, bold interface that makes progress feel visual and personal. Every screen was designed to reinforce the core idea: your running journey is a story worth leveling up. The color palette, typography, and avatar system were all chosen to create a strong sense of reward and progression, without overwhelming the user.
